Grey was apprenticed to Nimozaran the Green, the self-styled Archmage of Fallcrest, he left Nimozaran’s employ under a cloud- Grey, it is said, was a little too keen to improve his spell repertoire. Fallcrest is not safe for the mage- there are people looking for him- nasty people. Grey, in his studies, discovered clues to an ancient portal located in the lowest level of a long abandoned keep, a relic of the Nerath empire, the ruin he discovered is situated somewhere near the town of Winterhaven. The Wizard for some unknown reason feels that this new found knowledge is somehow important, in order to scratch the itch- and in the process get out of Fallcrest, he hired on with an adventuring band.
